Christina Ricci, Natalie Portman, and Thora Birch auditioned for the role of young Amy March, but the part went to Kirsten Dunst. Reese Witherspoon was considered to play both the young and adult Amy due to her short height. After it was decided it didn't work to have the same actress play the role in two separate timelines, Samantha Mathis was chosen to play the adult Amy. Hugh Grant and John Turturro both auditioned to play Professor Bhaer.
