In a 1992 article "Over the Rainbow" in the New Yorker noted author Salman Rushdie writes about the profound impact The Wizard of Oz had on him growing up in India, his perspective on life there and the political system; " the Wizard of Oz was here! The humbug, right in front of me! And so was the witch! And so was the yellow brick road.". Rushdie goes on to describe how The Wizard of Oz had a profound impact on him; and all his subsequent works; including the controversial and critically acclaimed "Satanic Verses".
