When Coraline finds the old well in the first act of the film, she discovers it's in a fairy ring she previously stepped in. In Western Europe, stepping in fairy rings can be either a good or bad omen. Often they are seen as hazardous and dangerous places, such as a human getting trapped in the fairy realm for stepping on their 'sacred ground'. Sometimes, they can be linked with good fortune, such as a person being allowed to interact with and enjoy the company of fairies for a night. In the film, Coraline experiences both the good and bad consequences of stepping in the fairy ring. At first, she's allowed to enjoy the pleasures of the Other World/"fairy world". But soon she's in danger of being trapped there forever unless she fixes both her mistakes and the mistakes of the children who came before her.
