Dan O'Bannon was on a pay or play deal for heading special effects; he would get paid whether he was there or not and was essentially given money to be a fly on the wall and keep quiet and was warned to do so. Dan was fed up with no-one listening to his adjustments and so against advice became more abrasive in his overseeing.
