Robotnik gaining powers from the Master Emerald is similar to the ending of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog's Chaos Emerald arc and the Robotnik Reigns Supreme arc from Sonic the Comic. Similarly, Knuckles cuts the threat of this down - much like in the opening of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994) - by punching the Emerald's power out of him. And accidently shatters the emerald while doing so.
