Alan Alda's increasing influence over the show over the years (thanks in part to his popularity with audiences) split the cast. Some resented his increasing meddling in the script writing and directing of some episodes and ultimately wanted to leave the show (such as Gary Burghoff) whilst other such as Harry Morgan found it to be beneficial by allowing them to take more central roles or even to be allowed to direct the odd episode.
