In season 1, Mark (Steve Zahn) discovers that his father did not really die of cancer in the mid-1980s (as Mark had thought since he was a teenager) but that he was actually a closeted gay man who died of AIDS. The creator of this show, Mike White, also had a deeply closeted father (Mel White, the evangelical pastor and ghostwriter for such far-Right, anti-LGBTQ figures as Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell), but unlike Mark's father, Mel is (as of July 2021) still alive and now happily married to his husband. Mel and Mike are on good terms and have twice teamed up as contestants on the reality competition show The Amazing Race, which often took them to tropical locales such as the one depicted in The White Lotus.
