Smaug only appeared as an eye in this movie, and as a vague outline in the distance, because Sir Peter Jackson had not yet decided on the look of his body. A similar thing had happened with Gollum in Il Signore degli Anelli - La compagnia dell'Anello (2001), whose brief appearances were largely obscured because the character had been redesigned for Il Signore degli Anelli - Le due torri (2002) and Il Signore degli Anelli - Il ritorno del re (2003).
