In the scene where Alana slaps Gary, Cooper Hoffman was not told that she was going to slap him. However, after trying for a better take, Hoffman was now anticipating the slap. Director Paul Thomas Anderson told Hoffman that he was changing the scene, and instead Gary would ask if he can touch her breasts, and the two would embrace. He then separately told Alana Haim to slap him when he asks if he may touch her. That is the take used in the film.
