The three Elven ring-bearers seen during the prologue are Galadriel, Gil-galad and Círdan. In both the book and the film, Gil-galad dies during the battle against Sauron, but he is mentioned several times thereafter in the book; in the movie, he is only seen once more during the prologue, portrayed by Mark Ferguson as he battles several Orcs, but his death scene was deleted and his name never used. Círdan, played by an uncredited Michael Elsworth, is also never identified. In the books, he was the Elf who did a futile attempt to have Isildur throw the one Ring into the fire of Mount Doom; this role was given to Elrond (Hugo Weaving) in the movie. Elsworth has another brief role in the movie as the Gondorian archivist when Gandalf is researching the One Ring, and appears again very briefly as Círdan at the end of Il Signore degli Anelli - Il ritorno del re (2003) (also uncredited).
