In 1770, Louis XV formally requested the marriage of Marie Antoinette to his grandson and heir (the future Louis XVI). The request was part of an effort to establish an alliance between France and Austria, ending a long-term political and military rivalry between them. The two countries had common enemies in the imperialistic ambitions of the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Prussia, motivating them to seek this alliance.
