Steven Spielberg was sent the script and had Robin Williams read it to him on a flight together. Spielberg was said to have been "mesmerized" by Williams' cold-reading of the script. Beeban Kidron was nine months pregnant when she was signed to direct, so Spielberg told her if she needed to leave production, he would direct the film for her.
