Joseph Fiennes strongly urged the writers against the character of Fred Waterford having any redemptive character arc, since he felt it would be untrue to the character's true evil and cowardly nature. Fiennes admitted that it was a challenge to play such a weak and distasteful character for so long, he found the role to be artistically satisfying in the context of the show.
