Hayden Panettiere replaced Anne Hathaway as Red in this sequel. Writer Cory Edwards explained that the role of Red was recast due to the recent success of Hathaway's career, saying "It's clear to me that her involvement in the first film was a nice favor for Harvey [Weinstein] and the last of her 'little girl roles.' You can see how a sequel to an animated film is not in her trajectory anymore."
