An aged Greek steamship called the S.S. Athinai, formerly the Grace ocean liner S.S. Santa Rosa, "played" the R.M.S. Titanic. Before production, the vessel had been destined for scuttling and scrapping. Production designer John DeCuir supervised workers from Greece, France, and Italy to transform the vessel into the Titanic.
