Terrence Malick made good of his promise to cast Christian Bale as the lead in this movie. He was originally penciled to play the lead role of Neil (Ben Affleck) in Malick's previous movie To The Wonder (2012), but his contractual obligations for The Dark Knight Rises (2012) prevented him from accepting it.
