James Anderson inhabited the character of Bob Ewell to the point where it didn't seem like acting anymore. He had lobbied hard to get the part, telling the producers that he "knew this man" intimately. According to interviews with other actors in the production, Anderson was kept at arms length by many of them because they felt somewhat put-off by his aura.
