The IT guy says that Easter's drive had been erased twice but not zeroed out. When a drive is erased, the directory is deleted. The sectors containing the data is flagged as being available but the actual data is untouched. "Zeroing" a drive is the extra step taken in which every sector of the drive is written with the binary character of zero, completely replacing the existing data. This, however, is not foolproof. As the data is written magnetically, the writing of the same zero character does not entirely erase every trace of the magnetized sector. With the right software, the faint variations in magnetic energy can be read, amplified, and in some cases retrieved. To truly erase a drive to a totally secure level the data must be overwritten several times over, including at least one pass that writes totally random binary characters.
