The character of the evil General Kael is named after film critic Pauline Kael, who was notorious for giving scathing reviews to popular and acclaimed films, and had never given any film George Lucas directed or produced a positive review. In a (predictably) negative review of the film, Kael admitted to being flattered and amused by the homage.
