Dr. Johnson (1707-84) had disfiguring facial scars because of childhood illness; he won a place at Oxford University but was forced to drop out because of his family's lack of money; his wife died while he was young, as did his brother (possibly from suicide); he endured years of humiliating poverty, even being arrested for debt after the publication of his groundbreaking dictionary; his life was blighted by clinical depression and possibly by Tourette's syndrome; and in his last years he suffered from painful inflammation of the testicles.
