For the final act of the film, Ed Warren is forced to perform the exorcism on Carolyn Perron. This never happened in real life (there was a sceance with a priest present that did not result in anyone being freed from possession) and in fact, a layperson (non-clergy) is not only never authorized to perform an exorcism, but it would be impossible for them to cast the demon out at all. In Catholic theology, it is only bishops who have the power and authority to cast out demons in Christ's name. Bishops are able to deputize priests to do this function for them; however, a non-ordained individual could never perform the ritual successfully. And in cases where laypeople have attempted to do so, it results in harm to them and the possessed. In addition to this, a single exorcism is rarely sufficient to cleanse a possessed individual. Usually the afflicted person must undergo multiple sessions to be fully cleansed.
