By this time Wayne had fallen into appearing in average to mediocre films, almost Presley-like in their formulas, relying on his reputation and iconic presence to sell tickets. With the exception of "True Grit" in 1969, and his final film, "The Shootist", he continued the same practice until the end of his career.
