The film's title Inner Space was derived from script of the film that inspired it - the 1966 science fiction film Viaggio allucinante (1966). In the film Fantastic Voyage, the term "Inner Space" was spoken at least twice: Once in a comment by the character General Carter, played by Edmond O'Brien, in which he uttered to himself "Something told me I got into the wrong end of this business. Inner space!"; and the other by the character Dr. Duval, played by Arthur Kennedy, in his statement of wonder while traveling intravenously through the patient's body "We stand in the middle of infinity, between outer and inner space."
