When Puss first attacks Shrek, he carves a "P" into the tree - a reference to Antonio Banderas (the voice of Puss) who also played Zorro in La maschera di Zorro (1998). Another reference is when Puss and Donkey are inspecting Shrek's new set of clothes after robbing the carriage, and remark "Not bad. Not bad at all." The same lines were used during the sword fight between Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones in that movie.
