In the films' novelization based on Graham Yost's original script, Terry Carmichael (played by Samantha Mathis) isn't a helpless character as she's depicted in the film. For example, the scene where boards the train and sees the guy programming the missile beats her up and she defends herself alot more than the finished film with the same result as she throws the hammer at his head hitting him the temple and dying. She also has a little more interaction with Christian Slater's character of Hale, revealing her background and her personal life.
