The sequence where McClane jumps off the building using a fire hose, which then comes off the wall causing McClane to drop, was inspired by and is an homage to Harold Lloyd's Preferisco l'ascensore (1923), where Lloyd is hanging off a building, grabs a rope and drops because the rope wasn't yet tied off.
