Before shooting, Moodysson and his team tried a variety of ways to achieve the look that they wanted. In production they shot on reversal super 16 which was cross developed, essentially using chemicals for negative color film on purpose. After color timing, they ended up with a very grainy image with strongly saturated colors, giving the film a very unique look compared to other Swedish features from late 90s.
