The "serious" play in which Tony is so interested is an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's story "Sadie Thompson". It was titled "Rain" and ran on Broadway for 608 performances from 1922-24 and three subsequent revivals, and was made into the films Tristana e la maschera (1928) and Pioggia (1932).
