By the sixth season of the show, actor Gary Coleman was approaching seventeen years of age and had lost most of his mannerisms and antics as a "cute kid" seen in the earlier seasons. In a type of "Cousin Oliver Syndrome", referencing the technique used in La famiglia Brady (1969) to introduce a much younger child into an aging sitcom in order to boost ratings, Danny Cooksey was cast as Sam who replaced Arnold as the "cute kid" with Arnold then assuming big brother roles previously held by Willis.
