The Silence of the Lambs debuted at the ShowEast convention in October 1990. As the audience sat in shocked silence while the closing credits rolled, screenwriter Ted Tally asked director Jonathan Demme if he thought their movie was too scary. Demme replied it could be. They still decided to go ahead with the movie's full release on Valentine's Day, 1991.
