Jane Wyman had always been Earl Hamner Jr.'s first choice for the lead role of Angela Channing. She read it and really liked the script. Wyman said she told Hamner she heard Barbara Stanwyck had turned it down to offer it to her best buddy, Wyman, herself. Hamner said the rumour was not true, and Stanwyck was never offered the role.
