In a November 2020 New York Times article by Saul Austerlitz, Scott Patterson (Luke) said that he and Lauren Graham (Lorelei) both realized soon after starting to appear on the show that if they hoped to have the lung capacity needed to keep up with the ultra-quick pace of the patter-type dialogue, they would both have to quit smoking: "she needed her wind, and I needed my wind," he said.
