In an alternate version of the scene where Shaw and Holloway argue about the dead Engineer (which can be found as a deleted scene on the Blu-Ray version), Holloway cynically suggests that Shaw came all the way to the planet "to ask God why he traded you for your mum", suggesting that Shaw's mother died while giving birth to her.
