The movie was influenced by 'Flash Gordon' (1980) from just a few year's earlier. This was in relation to some music score evoking Queen, a blonde haired hero protagonist, the costume and make-up of the Overlord villain is reminiscent of Ming the Merciless and a title song with the hero's name also being the song's title.
