The reason they have episodes where clients reach out to the lawyers from beyond state lines; and the Donnell and Associates gang wind up taking cases in California and Pennsylvania, (which rarely happens in real life); is because David E. Kelley wanted to have cases and storylines on the show that involved the death penalty; and Massachusetts, where the show is set, does not have the death penalty.
