During the heist to rescue Rufus Buck, Cherokee Bill asks the general on the train, "Are you going to let us off Dred Scot free?" Dred Scot was a important legal case which went all the way to the Supreme Court in 1857. Dred Scott, a slave, sued his owner for freedom as the law required slaves who spent time in free territories to be released from slavery. The Supreme Court ruled that citizenship was not intended to be granted to African Americans, causing a furor, further inflaming public debate over slavery, and contributing significantly to the start of the Civil War.
