This film avoids the common mistake made in period films of using only props and costumes from that decade. In other words, even though it is set in the 1950s, most of the props and set dressing is from the 1940s and 1930s. The reality is that most people don't buy brand new clothes or furnishings each year. Cars, clothes, furnishings, etc. that are five, ten, or twenty years old are common, especially in poorer areas. (This also conveniently explains why so much of the set dressing "looks old;" those antiques would have looked old even in the 1950s.)
