The film includes the first film depiction of the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire (textbook of magic) depicted in tales by H. P. Lovecraft , August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smith and several writers inspired by their stories. Its name is Greek for "an image of the law of the dead". It references the Greek terms "nekros" ("dead"), "nomos" ( "law") and "eikon" ("icon, image").
