The fan theories that the prequels "A Fistful of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More" are actually sequels to the "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" have some merit for several reasons. Both "prequels" are post Civil War, while GBU takes place during the war. Eastwood's costume is fully established and doesn't vary in the "prequels", and during Manco's conversation and planning session with Mortimer he mentions thinking about retiring from the business, suggesting that "For a Few Dollars More" is the actual end of the trilogy.
