Upon Constance McCashin's termination from the show, in late 1987, due to budget cuts, the writers chose to keep quiet about the death of Laura Avery. Fortunately, they didn't, until the end of the episode California: Flight of the Sunbirds (1987), which she did not appear in, but was credited for it. This was because they wanted a bitter-sweet atmosphere to the episode (right around the same time Julie Harris was also terminated, too, for the same reason with McCashin), and also, it set the tone for the 2-part special 200th episode that was dedicated solely to McCashin's character. In order for the 2-parter to air, for real, which was also aired on CBS, the producers also wanted to recap the past 199 episodes of the groundbreaking soap opera, for the 1st 8 seasons, viewers intended to know what was happening on the show, plus the producers added a little comedy to it.
