At the stopover town of Agua Caliente, Monco is challenged by three anonymous gunmen and subtly demonstrates his marksmanship by shooting three apples off a tree. Mortimer, who has guessed their plans and already slipped into town, has been watching the scene from a second story window and shoots four more apples off the tree. Although revolvers were chambered for six rounds, it was customary to load only five so the the hammer rested on an empty chamber for safety. Monco fires three rounds and Mortimer fires four, leaving just enough shots between the two to finish off the three gunman who realize they are outmatched and beat a hasty retreat. The choreographer of this scene obviously did his homework.
