The series had its roots as a starring vehicle for rappers Kid 'n Play. The duo turned down a sitcom deal after NBC cancelled their Saturday morning cartoon series, due to NBC's programming shift towards more teenager-focused shows on Saturday mornings. Ironically, they would go on to star in House Party, which was originally developed to be a vehicle for DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.
