The introduction of the character of Sam, with his southern drawl and jokes and stories about rural life, was an attempt to prolong the series and bring back the "cute kid" antics seen by Arnold Jackson in the earlier seasons, since Gary Coleman was himself nearly seventeen years old by the seventh season of the show. The attempt failed, and the series was canceled the following season.
