The scene with the three Mountain Trolls is the only scene in the entire Middle-Earth film saga where Trolls not only speak an understandable language and show some intelligence, but have actual names (Tom, William, and Bert, which are their names in The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien). Most of the time, Trolls (most notably the Cave Troll in the Balin's Tomb sequence in Il Signore degli Anelli - La compagnia dell'Anello (2001)) are depicted as dumb brutes with no linguistic capabilities at all, primarily used by Sauron's forces as Berserker-like soldiers or cheap slave labor (like at the Black Gate sequence in Il Signore degli Anelli - Le due torri (2002)). However, the cave trolls seen on Lord of the Rings are under Sauron's control, which could account for their silence and behavior.
