Welcome Back Kotter was the inspiration and prototype for Facts of Life, which was supposed to be a girls version of Kotter called Garrett's Girls with Charlotte Rae standing in for Gabe Kaplan as the lead, and Kim Fields, Mindy Cohn, and Lisa Welchel the distaff Sweathogs. However, Facts of Life turned out to be much more successful than Kotter, lasting nine seasons compared to Kotter's 4, becoming NBC's longest-running sitcom up to that point, and still holding the record as the longest-running show of any type with an all-female cast
