Costume Designer Tess Schofield met different hurdles in dressing the large numbers of extras, as well as the principal cast in the appropriate garb. "You can't just go and buy major amounts of period clothes from the store," she said. "You have to build them, so we had really skilled people from different backgrounds making the costumes. That involved sourcing fabrics from all over the world, including, of course, Istanbul. I came home from one of my early research trips there with a pile of traditional garments, slippers and accessories that we were then able to replicate for some of our crowd scenes."
