The scene of the meal at admiral Pellew's cabin before the attack can be seen as a foreshadowing of the climactic battle: as a meat pie is presented in the form of the coastal battery, the steward switches the French flag on top for a British flag. Pellew says that it would not be that easy and asks Hornblower to "launch the first broadside". As Hornblower is about to cut the pie, captain Hammond removes the British flag. In the end, Hornblower indeed launches the first attack, while Hammond is revealed to be the traitor working for France.
