Bilbo puts the One Ring on near the climatic fight scene between Thorin and Azog in order to warn Thorin about Bolg's reinforcement army. When he does, he sees the Elves as beings of white light and the Orcs as black shadows. This might be a reference to a scene with Saruman and the Uruk-Hai known as Lurtz in Fellowship of the Ring where Saruman reveals Orcs were originally Elves who turned traitor and joined forces with Morgoth and Sauron.
