The Q Continuum were originally going to be numerous identical individuals, all played by John de Lancie. This portrayal is rather apparent in the series opener, Star Trek: The Next Generation: Encounter at Farpoint (1987), with each change of costume usually resulting in a change in attitude and demeanor. However, by Q's next appearance, Star Trek: The Next Generation: Hide And Q (1987), this particular idea seems to have been dropped, with Q acting as a single individual, and later episodes introduced other members of the Q Continuum played by very different-looking actors, a gimmick which continued in a few episodes of Star Trek: Voyager (1995).
