Although the film received high praise from critics, it was deemed a box office failure, grossing only $23 million after a reported $70 million budget. The low earnings were partly due to the fact that the film had its nationwide debut on the same day (6th August 1999) as the successful The Sixth Sense - Il sesto senso (1999).
